Confirm sync status
Open OneDrive from the menu bar and make sure required files have finished syncing. Files On-Demand placeholders may not contain a complete local copy.
Unlink this Mac
In OneDrive Settings, open Account and choose Unlink this Mac. This stops sync without deleting your cloud files.
Quit and move OneDrive to Trash
Quit OneDrive, then move OneDrive.app from Applications to Trash. Microsoft documents this as the basic Mac uninstall path.
Do not blindly delete CloudStorage or Group Containers
Those folders can contain local copies, File Provider state, company SharePoint data, and account information. A very large folder is a reason to inspect it, not proof that it is safe to remove.
Review only app-specific leftovers
Preferences, logs, caches, and login items that clearly belong to OneDrive can be reviewed after unlinking. CleanWarden should keep user content and ambiguous Microsoft shared containers out of the default selection.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will uninstalling OneDrive delete cloud files?Uninstalling the app does not delete files stored at OneDrive.com, but deleting synced folders while still connected can propagate deletion. Unlink first.
Why is a OneDrive folder still on my Mac?The app and the synced content are separate. A local folder can remain after the app is removed.
Can I delete OneDrive Group Containers? Not blindly. They may hold File Provider state, account data, or local content shared with Microsoft apps.
